How to Delete Pages From a PDF (Including Those Blank Scanner Pages)

Blank pages, duplicate scans, the fax cover sheet nobody needs. Removing them takes seconds — the useful part is knowing which pages to look for.

Scanned documents arrive with passengers. A blank page for every sheet that was printed on one side, a cover page from the fax machine, the same page twice because the feeder grabbed two sheets and then re-fed one. None of it belongs in the copy you are about to send to a client.

Where the extra pages come from

The most common source is duplex scanning. Set a scanner to capture both sides of every sheet and feed it single-sided documents, and you get a perfectly blank page after each real one. A twelve page contract arrives as twenty-four pages, half of them empty.

The second source is combining. Documents merged from several sources bring their own cover sheets, separator pages and duplicated appendices. Nothing is wrong with any individual file; the assembly is what created the clutter.

Spotting blank pages that are not actually blank

A scanned blank page is rarely pure white. It carries dust specks, a shadow from the sheet edge, and often a faint impression of whatever was printed on the other side. Automated blank detection misses these, which is why a visual pass through thumbnails is more reliable than any clever filter.

This is also why blank pages are worth removing rather than ignoring. Each one is a full scanned image, so twelve blank pages in a scanned document can be several megabytes of nothing.

View every page as a thumbnail

Blanks, duplicates and cover sheets are obvious at a glance and invisible when scrolling one page at a time.

Mark what should go

Clicking pages suits scattered blanks; typing a range suits a block like an unwanted appendix.

Check what remains

Confirm the page count you expect before saving. Twelve pages from twenty-four is a good sign the duplex blanks are gone.

Save as a new file

Keep the original until you are certain nothing important went with the clutter.

Deleting pages does not reduce file size proportionally for text documents — but for scans it very much does, because each removed page was a full image.

What breaks when pages disappear

Anything that referred to a page by number. A table of contents still says the appendix is on page 30; internal links jump to whatever now sits at that position; bookmarks may point past the end of a shortened document. The text on the remaining pages is untouched, but the navigation around it may need attention.

If the document has printed page numbers on it, those were part of the page content and will now skip. Re-numbering afterwards is the tidy fix.

Delete, or extract?

If you want most of a document, delete the few pages you do not want. If you want a small part of a large document, extract that part instead — it is quicker, and it leaves the original completely untouched. People routinely delete forty pages to keep four, when pulling out those four would have taken one step.
