How to Reorder PDF Pages When the Scanner Gets Them Backwards

Reverse-order scans, chapters out of sequence, a signature page that ended up first. Page order is easy to fix once you can see the whole document.

Some document feeders take pages face down, some face up, and a good number of them produce a scan that runs from the last page to the first. You end up with a perfectly readable document in exactly the wrong sequence, and no obvious way to fix it short of scanning the whole thing again.

Reversing a whole document

A back-to-front scan is the easiest case, because it is one operation rather than twenty. Reversing the order flips the entire sequence at once, which is the correct fix roughly every time a feeder was loaded the wrong way up.

It is worth checking rather than assuming. Some scanners produce a stranger pattern with duplex scanning: all the front sides in order, followed by all the back sides in reverse. That needs interleaving rather than reversing, and it is far quicker to rescan with the correct setting than to fix by hand.

Moving individual pages

The other common case is a document that is mostly right. The signature page ended up at the front, an appendix landed in the middle of a chapter, or two sections were merged in the wrong order. Here you want to see every page as a thumbnail and shuffle a handful of them.

One practical note: moving a page one position at a time is fine for short journeys and tedious for long ones. If a page has to travel from the end of a hundred page document to the beginning, splitting the file and merging the parts in the order you want is faster than clicking ninety-nine times.

Thumbnails make the problem obvious. Scrolling page by page hides it.

Fix the big pattern first

If the whole thing is backwards, reverse it before touching individual pages.

Then move the strays

Rotate anything sideways and drop anything blank while you are here — it saves a second pass.

Save and check

Open the rebuilt file and read the first and last pages to confirm the sequence is right.

What to check after reordering

Printed page numbers do not move with the pages — they were part of the page content when the document was created. A reordered document may now read 1, 2, 7, 3, which looks like a mistake to anyone reading it. Re-numbering afterwards is the fix.

Internal links and bookmarks point at positions, so they can land in the wrong place after a heavy rearrangement. Ordinary web links inside the text are unaffected, since they point outward rather than at a page.

Getting it right at the scanner instead

If your scanner produces reverse-order documents every time, that is a setting rather than a fault. Most feeders have a face-up or face-down option and many have an explicit reverse-order toggle. Two minutes finding it saves this job on every future document.
